Dabbawalas

Much has been said and written about Mumbai's dabbawalas. I still continue to be amazed and thrilled by these dabbawalas who earn about $150 a month by delivering food in dabbas (metal food containers). They pick up the food from your home and deliver it at your office and after lunch pick up the dabbas and return it at your home.

They apparently cater to a few hundred thousand customers each day. They seem to operate with extraordinary efficiency with an error rate that any management would be proud of.

And remember, these are educated people. Management institutes study their operation because they are on par with any six sigma implementation.

It's amazing. To me they provide a shining example of how good we can be.

I have a wish. That I can spend a day with them to see how they do it. And to understand what made it possible.

The Hindi movie Lunch box shows a little of the Dabbawalas. And a critique of the film here: http://www.rajeevmasand.com/reviews/our-films/delicious/
