Sandaikozhi - A Nice Review

I like the movie Sandaikozhi as well as this review of that movie. Of course I like the sequence when the hero beats the sh** out of the villain (Lal) in a Chidambaram bus. And the scene where the villain's associate, in arrogance, calls up their associates in Madurai to inquire about the hero and a few minutes the associates call back saying that the villain better not go anywhere near the hero and that the hero belongs to a family which is extremely powerful.

Another movie I liked was Balu with Shaam and Meera Jasmine in it. Both are romantic movies. (If I said they were action movies my audience is likely to tune out.) But as Leeloo has pointed out I do love romantic comedic movies (apart from action movies, that is).

To X With Love :Poignant

It's poignant to pick up a book and find in it "To  with love" written by the buyer lovingly and then realize with a jolt that the book was purchased in a 2nd hand book shop.

Faroe Islands

I was browsing the map yesterday when I came across Faroe Islands and some photos from this site. Quite lovely.

The strange thing is that many sites describe, quite rightly, the location of these islands as being halfway between Iceland and Denmark. If you read about the history of these islands, it becomes apparent that they have / had strong links with both these countries.

Marathi Brahmins And 60% Being Not Majority

The other day I met a doctor who had colored eyes and whose name tag showed that her name was Gokhale. I happened to ask her whether she was Konkanastha (Brahmin) - she replied "No, she wasn't Konkani, but Marathi". I said I meant whether she was Konkanastha, I enunciated the word slowly and she seemed surprised when she replied "Yes".

Few decades back, a Marathi friend had told me that Marathis were classified as Deshastha, Konkanastha and Karade. That Konkanastha Marathis were from the Konkan coast. And I, of course, had earlier come to realize that Konkanastha people, being from the western part of the state, are more likely to have colored eyes than other Maharashtrians.

Then I started thinking about the Brahmin surnames among Maharashtrians. Of course, I know of Gokhale, Deshmukh, Joshi etc. But I wanted to know more..

And I came across this wiki:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deshastha_Brahmin and this sentence from that page - "asasa" "Brahmins constitute four percent of Maharahstra's population, and 60 percent of them are Deshastha Brahmins. The second largest Maharashtrian Brahmin community"

If 60% of all Maharashtrian Brahmins are Deshastha, how come they are the 2nd largest Maharashtrian Brahmin community? Hmm, maybe their total percentage comes to 150 or 200.

What Is My Real Bandwidth

Why is my bandwidth slower than rated speed: http://testmy.net/ipb/topic/28902-why-do-my-results-differ-from-speedtestnet-ookla-speed-tests/ A quote from this page:

"Multithreading can show that you're able to max out your connection by combining the speed of concurrent connections but a great connection can max out without having to multithread."

Speedtest and bandwidthplace also give report your speed and give quite different speeds. For me a way to measure bandwidth is to take an X Megabyte file and clock the time T it takes to upload or download to Google drive. Then the speed is calculated as:

Speed in MBPS = X * 8(multiply by 8 to convert Megabytes to Megabits)/T

Pretty simple.
