The Haj

Quotes (without permission) from the book by Leon Uris

His situation was even more lonely, for a muktar must never let anyone know his thoughts. A structure of silence was the rule of life. Public utterances, even to a friend or relative, were always based on what was expected to be said. No one spoke of personal longings, secret ambitions, fears.
[Gideon Asch] ‘Suppose we didn’t have the water arrangement. Would you have encouraged your people to riot [against Jews]]?’ [Muktar Ibrahim] "During the summer heat my people become frazzled. They worry about the autumn harvest. They are drained. They are pent up. They must explode. Nothing directs their frustration like Islam. Hatred is holy in this part of the world. It is also eternal. If they become inflamed, I am but a muktar. I cannot stand against a tide. You see, Gideon, that is why you are fooling yourselves. You do not know how to deal with us. For years, decades, we may seem to be at peace with you, but always in the back of our minds we keep up the hope of vengeance. No dispute is ever really settled in our world. The Jews give us a special reason to continue warring.’... ‘Aha!’ Ibrahim said. ‘That proves you are weak and that will be your downfall. You are crazy to extend us a mercy that you will never receive in return.’
[Ibrahim] Perhaps Islam looks fanatical to you, but it provides us with the means to survive the harshness of this life and prepare us for a better life hereafter.’
'So the purity of the zionist dream becomes tainted with the ugliness of reality' Brompton said.
[Ibrahim] As for me, for a quarter of a century I was the Muktar of Tabah and never once in that time did we turn a stranger from our doors. [Mayor Clovis Bakshir] 'You never woke up one morning to discover fifty thousand people camped in your square'...'Government to them is a mystical extension of Islam'
The belt of Islam held some of the planets worst land, which ran from North Africa into the dismal places of the pacific ocean. It was that crushing part of the world where men could not beat the earth. Numbly they embraced Islam and its fatalistic outlook. Islam gave them something to grasp hold of in order to continue the struggle through life. This land bullied everyone who attempted to exist on it. So harsh, so brutalizing were the forces of nature that those people imprisoned upon it were convoluted into forming a society where cruelty was commonplace.

Ibrahim needed information, perhaps guidance, but men even so close by blood Relationship and position seldom spoke straight with one another.
Mohammed is the final and ultimate prophet. He alone is the messenger of Allah. All other religions are therefore null and void. The nonbelievers are infidels, always to be suspected and eventually to be destroyed.
My father was very liberal at letting the villagers run up a debt on the theory that 'a man in your debt cannot call you  a dog,  for he is the dog and must obey '
All Muslims realize they have no control over their own lives and destinies.
Illness,  death, drought, pestilence, earthquakes, any disasters must be fatalistically accepted as the will of Allah.
[Ishmael] My father said many times to me that or people were more easily moved by words than by ideas and more by ideas than logic.
[Colonel Sayyad] It is not for general consumption,  but there will also be a declaration that Jordan will grant automatic citizenship to any Palestinian who do desires '. How humanitarian,  Ibrahim thought.  The little king rules an impoverished Bedouin wasteland that cannot feed itself.  If the British Leanne with their subsidy,  it will be a beggar nation. It cannot survive without money from the Syrian and Egyptian and Saudi treasuries.  Abdullah is now trying to artificially inflate his population and use us to lay claims to lands that do not belong to him. The king is farting higher than his ass.
[Ibrahim] Some things never change. Allow a woman to walk in front of you and you will catch her wind for the rest of your life.
[Jesus to ishmael] The truth is that Allah is one. He is all-good and all - evil. He has planted an equal measure of good and bad in all of you. You have been given a mind, in order to wage a war within yourself and to satisfy only yourself. Hang on to your own soul. Don't give it away. Find your own answer and you will be free.
Haj Ibrahim was fine-tuned to Mudhil’s every word to catch an inference, a hidden meaning, unspoken words between spoken words, unspoken lines between spoken lines.
[Ishmael] What was it that Dr. Mudhil had read to me by T. E. Lawrence, that great English hero of the Arabs? He said ... let me think ... yes, I remember: The Arabs have no halftones in their register of vision ... They exclude compromise and pursue the logic of their ideas to its absurd ends, without seeing the incongruity of their opposed conclusions. Their convictions are by instinct, their activities intuitional. ... Clever man, that Lawrence of Arabia, clever man.

Ore Kallula Rendu Manga

The vice principal (VP) in a school occasionally asks me to help with their timetable (TT). Recently she came to me and said one of the teachers (a male) wanted a change in his TT. The guy apparently felt that the lunch (half) hour was not adequate for him to go out and get lunch - he being one of those guys who can't or won't get lunch from home and there being no good restaurants near the school. The VP wanted me to give him adequate time to go out and get lunch and hence could I please move his periods more towards the end of the afternoon...

I gave the VP a temporary solution involving the TT. But I wasn't happy. There are times when some children (students) forget to get lunch either because they or their moms were remiss. They are given biscuits; sometimes other students or teachers share their lunch with those children.

I know the principal of the school has often toyed with the idea of arranging a caterer to deliver piping hot and healthy lunch at school. But this idea has not yet fructified.

Incidentally this school has a period for children where teachers teach them to make snacks, juice etc. This period is held always in the afternoon and children have one period a week of this class. I have often tasted what the children make under the auspices of a teacher. And it's usually very nice and tasty.

I thought further. What if this cooking class was held prior to lunch so that the snacks or juice was available to those teachers and students who came without their lunch bag? Wouldn't it be a nice thing?

There are 5 classes or grades that have this cooking period. And each can take turn, the 1st on Monday, the 2nd on Tuesday and so on. The school could ensure that the cooking period is scheduled in that period in the forenoon session when the respective teacher is free. Simple.

I will discuss this soon with the vice principal and get it rolling.

Nadiya Moidu - South's Shabana Azmi

As per this article, Her first movie was apparently Nokketha Doorathu Kannum Nattu which was remade in Tamil as Poove Poochooda Vaa.

We have Revathys, Zareena (or Naiya) Moidu's and we also have the rest of the faceless heroines. I mean they - rest of them - do have faces but then who remembers them.

Surprisingly Nadiya's first film was directed by Fazil whose movies are usually out of the ordinary and grab my attention.

Another such director is Rajkumar Hirani: See the table on filmography in the wiki link.

Where is that Mudhalvane Vane Vane?

Now it's election time in Tamil Nadu. DMK and ADMK fighting like Republicans and Democrats.

DMK asks where the (ADMK) government was when the floods came in November and December 2015. And accuses the present government of rising prices and rampant poverty. That ADMK promised the people a whole lot during the pre-election days in 2011 and that none of the promises was kept.

ADMK says that the during DMK government there was rampant corruption by DMK. That Jayalalitha gave the people all she had promised and more. (Loosely copied the dialog from Rowdy Rathore: "Mein jo kehta hoon wo karta hoon. Jo nahi kehta hoon wo definitely karta hoon". That there was 15 hours of power cut (electricity outage daily during DMK's rule while Tamil Nadu has become power surplus now.

Each party has promised the people various things were it to come to power. So many grams of gold for girls to get married. Essential commodities will be given to people at throw away prices. And so on.

The joker in the pack (read BJP, the smallest of the local parties) quotes people saying that they are sick of the successive governments [DMK and ADMK] and they need a change. That roads in the state are in awful condition while the national highways created by the central government are in great shape.

While various celebrities (SPB, Gowthami, Krishnamachari Srikanth exhort people to exercise their right of franchise and to not sell their honor by voting for any party based on money given to them. All nice and dandy.

I wonder. Is it really wrong to vote for that party that pays you Rs 500 (about $6) per family. At least you get the money in hand. Isn't it better than two in the bush - all the promises being made by each party?

Frankly I do wonder. Where was the state government (ADMK) during the floods? Nobody had any clue when the water from the overflowing Chembarakkam dam was opened at night. Public wasn't informed. State Government was completely missing. The rescue effort was largely handled by NGO's and heroics by isolated individuals and National Disaster Response Force.

As to the behavior of the DMK team when it was in power, one is sick and tired of all the multi-thousand rupee crore scams that DMK was involved in.

Why are we getting caught in the quagmire of rhetoric of each party? Why are words allowed to be spoken louder than action? Why are we, the people, not looking at what was done by each government in the past? Why are we focusing on promises being made? Is voting based on bigger promises any more honorable than voting for the party that gave you more money?

Where is an independent honest appraisal of what each government did in the past? Who is doing that?

Where is that Mudhalvan?
